PFL Finals Series First Leg Recap

With the first leg of the semifinals over, Global Cebu FC and Ceres Negros FC hold slim one goal advantages over their counterparts going into the 2nd legs this coming Dec 9-10.

This was supposed to be played in Cebu but Global Cebu FC were forced to play their “home” game at Rizal Memorial Stadium due to scheduling conflicts with their usual home stadium of Cebu City Sports Complex.

The away side dominated much of the game with the breakthrough coming in the 60th minute with Global defender Daryll Regala fouling Meralco Ace Tahj Minniecon in the box. The Aussie coolly slotted his effort beyond Patrick Deyto’s reach giving the Sparks a one goal lead.

The sparks looked like good money heading into the dying minutes of the game only for Wesley Dos Santos to spoil the fun by scoring a glancing header from Global’s only corner from the game silencing the Sparks crowd. But adding insult to injury, referee Salvatera called for 3 minutes stoppage time which was all Global’s Pika Minegeshi needed to score an injury time winner giving Global the 2-1 win.

With everything still to play for in the 2nd leg, Meralco will be hoping to get one back against Global to finally reach that elusive continental competition slot.

In what proved to be a very physical encounter, Ceres Negros FC managed to squeak past a resilient KAYA FC Makati side. The game was uneventful but was not short of action as the away side went close a couple of times only to be foiled by the heroics from KAYA keeper Ref Cuaresma.

With the game looking likely to end in a stalemate, Ceres Negros talisman Stephan Schrock struck deep into injury time to give the Busmen that crucial away goal.

But with only one goal to separate the two sides, KAYA FC Makati will be looking for that crucial equalizer in Bacolod to ensure they extend their season. Both teams will be looking to win the next leg and progress to the AFC Cup proper for only the 2nd time in their respective histories.
