2019 CoPA: Dream start for Kaya to defend the crown

They started out slow but they ended it with a bang. The 2018 Copa Paulino Alcantara champions Kaya FC-Iloilo marched on to a comfortable five-nil win over Philippine Air Force FC to kick things off in their title defence.

Reeling from the frustration of their final matchday in the league against rivals Ceres-Negros FC, Kaya FC used this match against Philippine Air Force FC to reiterate that they’re still a tough team to beat.

They started out strong thanks to Jayson Panhay’s goal on the 29th minute. In what seemed to be a clearance from Alfred Osei, Panhay made the most out of it to go for the quick attack before slotting it to the bottom right corner of the goal past Mark Mendome.

Four minutes after, Kenshiro Daniels doubled the lead for the cup champions after just being introduced to the match three minutes before the said goal.

The play started with him as he headed the ball down to Shirmar Felongco who then gave him a neat pass to the middle. Daniels then worked his way past Joel Ballo-Allo Jr. which allowed him to take a crack on goal for their second of the match.

The men in yellow didn’t stop from there as they took another goal on the 37th minute, this time, through Connor Tacagni. The 29th-minute goal-scorer, Panhay, deliver a corner to the near post where Tacagni positioned himself well then rose to the occasion. Simple yet an exquisite finish nonetheless for the 26-year old winger.

Onto the second half of the match, things started slow for Iloilo as they had to wait until the 62nd minute to score another one. Daniels got his brace in quite an unexpected manner as Glenn Bulaquiña tried to clear the ball out only to hit Daniels on the back that allowed the ball to get into the back of the net.

The PAF defender tried to clear the lines only to find the ball rolling towards the path of Angeles who then simply placed his shot down the bottom left corner of the goal to seal the victory for the defending champions.

It might’ve been a shaky performance for Kaya FC-Iloilo but nonetheless, a masterclass performance over Philippine Air Force FC to kickstart their campaign in defending their title.

They will have a week and a half break before they face Stallion Laguna FC in their final group stage match in the 2019 Copa Paulino Alcantara.
