Defending champs San Beda Red Lions give the Letran Knights a tough beating to open NCAA Season 95

Football season is back in the collegiate division as the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) kicks off its 95th season with San Beda University and Colegio de San Juan de Letran squaring off in the opening fixture.

The defending champions imposed their dominance as they were able to get an early goal from Rosi Sumudivila on the 11th minute. They would then get their second of the match just four minutes after the opener.

Jessie Reil Semblante left the defenders behind to open his account in the NCAA. It was as easy as a piece of cake for the red lions as they were able to notch their third goal of the match through Sumudivila’s brace on the 38th minute.

Wanting to keep their momentum going for the second half, Christopher Villanueva Jr. scored their third goal two minutes into stoppage time.

Into the second half, the red lions got another goal through a well-orchestrated play that was booked home by Keith Edulan in the 51st minute.

Sumudivila wrapped up his hat-trick in the 54th minute after he received an exquisite long ball from Elljhone Clyde Rasonable.

It’s as if six was not enough, the red lions went for their seventh goal of the match thanks to Ecemer Payosalan two minutes after Rosi’s hat-trick.

By the time San Beda University scored their eighth goal of the match, the Knights were just down and out. Miguel Pasion buried is shot to the bottom left corner of the goal and did not allow the keeper to get to it in the 58th minute..

The defending champions found themselves on cloud nine after a breakaway from Payosalan who garnered his brace a minute after Pasion’s goal.

Semblante headed in his second to put the defending champions up by 10 goals in the 66th minute. Though the keeper got his hands to it, the power of the header was so much for him to handle.

It’s as if 10 goals were not enough to let the people know that they are the defending champions, Reinhard Colasito opened his account in the 79th minute to give his side a commanding lead over the lowly Knights.

Into the stoppage time, coach Niboy Pedimonte’s side notched their 12th goal through an easy tap-in by Maurice Humol. His first strike was saved by Letran’s substitute keeper but wasn’t able to do anything for the tap-in.

Humol eventually got his brace in the dying minutes of the match with a well-placed shot to the bottom left corner of the net.

Yung first half could’ve been better. Luckily we adjusted in the second half but we still have a lot of things to work on. May mga players na nagstep-up but may mga players din na naiiwan. Yun yung kailangan naming i-work on. Overall, good result but I am not satisfied,” said coach Niboy Pedimonte after the match.

Speaking with the press after the match, hat-trick scorer Sumudivila expressed his gratitude to his coaches. “Unang una po, nagpapasalamat kami sa Panginoon. Kay coach, kasi tinulungan nya po kaming makalaro dito at nagawa namin lahat para manalo.”

After that dominating display, the Red Lions will be facing Mapua Institute of Technology on the 20th of January at the same venue where they got off to a strong start.
