Freddie Mercury put it best in Queen’s hit song, as another one bites the dust. The 2020 AFC Cup could not escape the specter of the COVID-19 pandemic as it has been cancelled in the wake of a recent AFC Executive Committee meeting earlier today.
The second-tier Asian club competition, which had been mooted to return on the 23rd, was cancelled after logistical challenges in finishing the competition as formatted enjoined the committee to invoke a force majeure clause and scrap the current competition. Meanwhile, the AFC Champions League will continue with further details to be announced after Qatar stepped in to host the Final.
News of the cancellation comes as a big blow to league and cup runners-up Kaya FC, who were in a good position heading into matchday 4 of the group stages two points behind SPL side Tampines Rovers, and erstwhile double-holders United City FC who had a firm grip on their group.
