United City FC has sent a resounding statement of their title intentions as they recorded a thumping 6-0 victory over Mendiola FC 1991 in their Qatar Airways Philippines Football League (PFL) 2020 fixture earlier today at the PFF National Training Center in Carmona, Cavite.
United City’s dynamic striking duo led the demolition job for the men in black and gold as Bienvenido Maranon scored a hat-trick, while Robert Lopez Mendy added two goals. Midfielder Manny Ott joined the goal tally, scoring one as well.
Right from the opening whistle, United City looked to be the aggressor and assert their dominance in the match. They were rewarded right away as Maranon scored the opener off a Stephan Schrock free kick in the 12th minute and followed it with a second at the 25th minute as his volley off Pika Minegishi’s deflected cross went through the legs of Mendiola goalkeeper Dini Ouattara who was unable to stop it.
Lopez Mendy joined the offensive for United City by scoring his first goal in the 38th minute, heading yet another pinpoint cross from Minegishi and was clipped by Ouattara five minutes later inside the penalty box, leading to Maranon’s third goal from the spot and completing the Spaniard’s hat-trick to close the first half.
The second half was more of the same story with United City dictating the match in all aspects. Mendiola conceded another penalty in the 51th minute as their forward JR Malayo giving Lopez Mendy a two-footed tackle from the back. Mike Ott went on to coolly slot the spot-kick to score his second goal of the competition. The Senegalese forward eventually got his brace in the 60th minute as Maranon’s searching cross was palmed by Ouattara to his direction, setting up an easy header.
With a comfortable cushion, head coach Frank Muescan decided to cap off a successful performance for United City by giving professional debuts to former UAAP high school star Pocholo Bugas and UP standout Miggy Clarino on 72 minutes.
Mendiola was unable to get something going throughout the match with their offense kept silent by the United City defense led by Sean Kane and Jordan Jarvis, with matters going from bad to worse with center forward Stephen Appiah leaving the match in the 35th minute to a hamstring injury. Midfielder Aaron Altiche is the only one who went closest for the Brave Men as his looping shot from outside the box went only inches off the crossbar on 57 minutes.
United City will have Maharlika Manila as their next assignment on November 3, with Mendiola looking to rebound against the Azkals Development Team (ADT) on the same day.
