The last full matchday of the 2020 Philippines Football League brought to you by Qatar Airways started with a slow-burning yet delectable bang as the Azkals Development Team bagged their third win on the bounce by beating an out-of-it Stallion Laguna 2-0.
The men in pink, looking to bounce back after a 7-1 drubbing at the hands of champions United City, started off brightly, breaking well despite determined ADT defending and even coming close to opening the scoring, Janjan Melliza almost slotting home in the 7th minute if not for ADT right-back Simen Lyngbo’s dogged block at the goal-line. Both teams then had good stretches of play the rest of the first half, knocking on each other’s doors but halftime met them scoreless.
The second half was a different story, though, as halftime adjustments from ADT gaffer Scott Cooper saw them able to throw attacking pressure at the Raging Horses, and the pressure eventually paid off in the 52nd minute as an interception deep in the Stallion half saw Carlo Dorin bundle the ball into the back of the net after Nelson Gasic spilled an Yrik Gallantes shot from the top of the box. The lead doubled in the 62nd minute as Yrik Gallantes won a penalty from Stallion captain Balot Doctora on the edge of the box, which Jarvey Gayoso duly converted for his 4th goal of the campaign. Despite mounting a spirited effort, including substitute Griffin McDaniel hitting the side netting, Stallion were unable to get anything going and the win means the Young Azkals eill finish the campaign no lower than third place.
