With their sights already towards the semifinals, Arellano University had to go through the needle and try something new against Emilio Aguinaldo College and secure a three-nil win.
Knowing it would be a real test for them, Arellano University Chiefs threaded into the game with some caution and also had a feel of uncertainty.
However, in the 12th minute, Spencer Galasa headed the ball past the keeper to open the scoring and to extend his lead to keep his pole position as league’s top-scorer.
It took some time but the Chiefs got their second goal thanks to Al Jun Baclason’s chip over the keeper in the 35th minute.
A minute before the end of the first half, last season’s runners-up tried to expand their lead to three but they are tasting a little bit of misfortune as multiple attempts from their attackers found failed to score a goal.
The second half saw an improved Emilio Aguinaldo College side with them preventing a massive scoreline against them. They’ve also broken loose from the shackles of holding from the back as they went for a chance on goal.
In the 58th minute, Jonathan Muñez took a crack on Charles Ledesman but the keeper parried the ball away.
They came closer to a goal in the 66th minute when Renz Olaer broke loose from the defence but he overcooked his effort on goal.
The Generals managed to hold the Chiefs scoreless in the second half until the 86th minute as Regil Suplito put the icing on the cake after a simple tapping inside the box.
“Since nagpalit ng mga tao, nahirapan agad mag-adjust. Pinalakas nga nila (EAC) yung depensa nila,” said coach Ravelo Saluria.
He added, “Ang aim namin ngayon is to finish first or second place for twice to beat advantage. Every game ini-improve namin.“
They will meet San Beda University Red Lions on Thursday, February 6 to close out the eliminations and hopefully, to secure pole position heading into the semifinals.
